Everybody secretly – or not so secretly – wants to be in better physical shape. It affects how you’re perceived in the culture and how you think of yourself. If you want to win…over injury …over atrophy…or just over your own perceived limitations, you can do it.

Will, a personal trainer and CrossFit coach, is convinced of this and he believes in each of his clients which is why he is able to walk with them on their path to success. He knows that there is no one magic bullet for everyone but there are decisions you can make to get you where you want to be. We spent a few minutes talking with Will about personal training, physical fitness, and winning.

How did you become a personal trainer?

After college, I met a person in the gym who was one of the top 5 in the world for powerlifting. He had been watching me without me noticing and came up afterwards and casually mentioned that I was really strong. He was looking for a weightlifting partner. I was 23 at the time. I met him the next day and started powerlifting that year. I eventually made it to 14th in the nation in the 148 lb. class. That was a big win for me.

About a year-and-a-half later, I met another person who was a personal trainer in people’s homes. He was willing to show me the ropes and I wanted to learn. So he asked all of his existing clients if I could shadow him. His wife was a trainer too. They were both magnificent trainers. Later, the wife had to go on a trip and asked if I would take over her clients while she was gone. They loved the way I worked with them and from then on I was able to get my own clients through word of mouth.

When I moved to Wellington, that same trainer called me because he had bought all the CrossFit licenses for every city in Florida when it was new here. He started the first CrossFit in Florida and suggested that I get trained so I did. I like the functional movements of CrossFit. It makes you use every part of your body the way it’s supposed to be used. Over the years my philosophy has changed. When I first started it was bodybuilding and powerlifting, then learning CrossFit changed things.

How Can A Personal Trainer Help Me?

There are three things that contribute to peak physical fitness: diet, weight bearing exercises, and cardiovascular training. A personal trainer can work with you to create a strength training program where you can make progress without injury. They can help you plan your cardiovascular workouts so that they make your strength training more effective and vice versa. And, a personal trainer can consult with you about your diet because you are only as healthy as the food you eat. In order to win, you need to be working on all three of these at the same time.

Whenever a new client comes to me, I always do an assessment so I can show them how I can help them. I have a wide variety of clients – athletes, seniors, teens. There are no perfect people. Everyone has something they want to work on. The results for older people are very dramatic because we are reversing atrophy. I’ve also had a lot of success working with people who have had injuries. You need strength training if you’ve had an injury. I’m able to teach them what to do and what not to do.

What do you like most about your job?

For me, it’s all about the person’s goals and needs. Every client is different and I love adapting their workout to their fitness level and seeing them win. I think my biggest accomplishment is being well rounded in everything which means I can meet each client where they are.

About 10 years ago I worked in Boca Raton at the Jewish Community Center. I trained a group of mentally challenged people. That work made such a difference in their lives that their parents would call me, crying, to thank me. There is a tremendous amount of satisfaction in being able to help people that way. I take advantage of everything Cheryl has here. It’s so fun. You’ve got to love what you do. I look forward to coming to work everyday.

With the Winter Equestrian Festival and the 2020 Polo Tournament right around the corner, we took the time to chat with expert equestrian trainer, Diego Piriz. Diego has been training riders since 2007. He worked for the International Polo Club for more than six years and now works as a personal trainer trainer serving individual clients.

How did you come to specialize is training equestrian athletes?

My first job as a trainer was in Wellington at the International Polo Club where I trained the riders. I worked with polo, dressage, and show riders. I worked for Alejandro – director of fitness for the polo club. The job kept me six months in Florida and six months traveling. I would be in the Hamptons during the summer season and also Aiken, SC, Franklin, TN, and Lexington, KY. I would travel with the equestrians and train the riders to make them as physically fit as possible.

How should an equestrian athlete train who wants to be at the top of their game?

For an equestrian rider the number one thing is always core strength. In addition, in order to be in top shape they need stability, lower body strength in each leg and both legs, and upper body strength, especially in their back. Flexibility is also huge so that they can recover faster. I recommend implementing stretching in every session combined with cardiovascular in order to get in the best shape.

The horse is the athlete but the rider has to be the best athlete as well. They are a unit, so the rider needs to be in the best shape possible. They have to work out like any other athlete. Functional training is one of the keys for riders. In functional training, the athlete uses their own body weight for resistance, along with equipment like bands or balls. The main focus should be functional training because it requires the athlete to use the entire body. Then, equestrian athletes can also do weight training, but not with heavy weights. A rider who tries to deadlift 200 lbs. won’t be able to ride the horse the next morning. Then they need to implement all kinds of different stretching and focus on recovery as well. Their goal is to be limber and flexible and strong at the same time.

How is training different for riders in show jumping, polo, and dressage?

The job they have to do on top of a horse is different for each sport. It requires different muscle engagement. For example, polo lasts for 90 minutes and is played by 4 players. A show jumping course will last one minute with one rider on a course with different obstacles. Dressage is one rider on stage in an arena riding to music. The horse has to go to the beat.

All riders need a lot of flexibility, a lot of core strength, and a lot of lower body strength. The back is the main muscle and it’s part of the core. Then specifically, dressage is all about posture — the rider has to be completely straight. In show jumping, the rider has to lean forward with their back straight. In polo, the rider has to lean forward and rotate. They also have to hit the ball while riding on a horse at 30-40 mph. This requires a lot of stability and balance.

What is your philosophy of training, health, and wellness?

I believe that proper nutrition is the most important part of training, along with recovery and sleep. I know that might be surprising coming from a personal trainer, but without those things, you won’t see the most benefit from your time in the gym. Then you have to be consistent. You can’t just train once or twice a week. If you’re seeing a trainer, you need to be in the gym 3 or 4 more times during the week. Finally, an athlete must be able to manage stress. This can be done through quiet times, breathing, journaling, meditation, and other things.

What do you love most about your work?

I love to be able to touch people’s lives, to have an impact, and to be able to bring them up. As a personal trainer, I can touch people in so many different ways. Ten years will go by and they will still remember the day I helped them to succeed — whether it was losing weight or finishing a race. I love that.

About Diego

In November 2007, Diego Piriz became one of the physical trainers at Polo Fitness where founder and creator Alejandro Moraes assigned him a variety of elite international equestrians. Diego is a respected personal trainer known for motivating , educating ,and inspiring athletes nationwide. He works with his Wellington clients at Resilient Fitness in Wellington, FL.
Do you want to be as care free as possible on your much deserved vacation without worrying about the scale skyrocketing once you return? Here are some keys to help you avoid weight gain!

In the end, how much or how little your vacation ends up interfering with your overall progress/physique is on you. But if you are smart about it, you will come home fine and be right back to where you were before you left. Below is a short list of options that will hopefully put your mind at ease about what to do while you’re on vacation:

Portion control

Maybe you are staying at an all-inclusive resort where food & drinks are abundant 24/7. That’s totally fine, but control yourself. If you have a huge breakfast at a buffet, try not to stuff yourself with a one-pound cheeseburger and a pile of waffle fries for lunch. If you opt for a light lunch or a snack instead, it . Or you can always go with my personal philosophy – eat until you’re comfortably full. Don’t eat until you are so full that you hate yourself. The same thing goes for drinks.

Intermittent fasting

There is not anything inherently magical about intermittent fasting. It is just a way to control your overall food intake. If you are on vacation, it means you’ll be able to find something fun & exciting to do. So maybe skip breakfast after you wake up and occupy your mind and your time with something fun until noon comes around and it is time for lunch. Time flies when you are on vacation. It should not be hard to fill your time with other things. You can decide what time you want to fast and what time you want to eat.

Staying active

Most resorts have gyms. Better yet – most resorts have a beach! Go run. Go swim in the water! If you’re active, you’re more likely to burn off the food you ate. Even if you can’t find time to exercise, you’d probably be surprised at the number of calories you burn just by walking around and sightseeing. There are a number of ways to stay active. Literally anything besides sitting down all day.

Making Your Own Meals

This option sucks, but if you are REALLY worried about not being able to do any of the above, making your own meals might be the best option, and honestly, it’s the only way to accurately know how many calories you’re eating. Will it be convenient? No, probably not. But it all depends on where you’re at with your fitness goals and what you’re willing to sacrifice to accomplish them.

And finally…Do nothing

That’s right. It isn’t a secret to staying slim. But does it make you care free? Yeah. After all, it’s called a vacation for a reason – you VACATE your regular life for a bit. It’s a good break for your mind, it’s good break for your body. Might this option result in coming back a few pounds heavier than when you left? Well if you vacationed right, then yeah it might! I kid, I kid. But seriously, it most likely will. And that is totally fine.

You know exactly what you need to do to get back on track with things when you get home. Get back to your exercises, drink plenty of water, and get your diet in check again. Most of your post-vacation weight gain is going to be from glycogen, sodium, water, and a small percentage might be actual fat. But again, get back on track and you’ll be back to normal in only a few short days.

People don’t give the human body enough credit. It is incredibly efficient at maintaining it’s current state. You really have to give it a reason to change. It doesn’t want to lose or gain weight. It is happy where it is. That’s not to say gaining weight is hard. That’s the easy part. This is where I go back to portion control. Be smart about what you eat and how much you eat, and I bet you’ll surprise yourself with how easy it is to stay around your normal weight upon returning.

If you’re looking for personalized instruction, fantastic workouts, and noticeable results, working with a personal trainer may be the best investment of time and money you make in 2019. With that in mind, here are the top ten reasons we think you should consider either small group training or one-on-one personal training.

A personal trainer will help you set realistic, attainable goals. Success breeds success. When you repeatedly set and achieve goals, it helps you to create your own upward spiral of accomplishment.

A personal trainer will help you separate fact from fiction. There’s a lot of misinformation about fitness out there. How do you know what to believe? That’s why you want to work with someone who is trained to teach others to exercise. In this case, they can help you select the right exercises for your goals and ensure that you are performing them correctly.

A personal trainer can help you form good habits. You’ll learn the how and why of the exercises your trainer recommends so that you can easily incorporate them into your daily life.

A personal trainer will keep you accountable. Because you have committed your time and treasure to these appointments, you will show up. In addition, your personal trainer may ask you to keep a record of your workout routines and eating habits. Then they will know if you haven’t kept your commitments. Sometimes that’s all it takes to persevere.

A personal trainer is in your corner. They are your cheerleader and coach. They provide support and encouragement when you doubt your abilities or become stuck.

Personal training is individualized and personalized. It’s tailored to your needs and current capabilities. While exercise classes are convenient and can be a lot of fun, they don’t take into account your age, physical fitness level, or medical conditions. Personal training does.

Personal training will eliminate wasted time at the gym. Without a plan, it’s easy to come to the gym and spend unnecessary time figuring out what you want to do first, then second, then third. With a personal trainer you arrive and get right down to business.

Personal training can help you develop a “growth mindset using grit and resilience”. A growth mindset “perceives challenges as an opportunity to learn rather than an obstacle to be overcome.”

Personal training can help you learn to enjoy exercise. It’s a chance to take a break from the stresses and responsibilities of life. Because you are always progressing, it’s never boring. As you get better and better it becomes more and more fun.

Personal training can help give you mastery over your situation. Nobody wants to feel weak and fearful. As your strength and endurance grows, you will become more competent and confident. In addition, you are acquiring lifetime habits and skills that will lead to long-term physical fitness and reinforce your personal power.

Interested? There are two options for people who want the benefits of personal training.

Small Group Personal Training

The first option is small group training which is a customized program of personalized instruction in a small group setting. One trainer works with five to seven participants. She observes their workouts, corrects their movements, and helps them to advance at their own rate of speed. Thus, small group training is large enough to be fun and small enough to be effective. It allows people to have access to the expertise of a trainer at a price that is gentler on their wallet. The benefits of working with a group include increased motivation, the lift of group energy, and new friendships.

One-on-One Personal Training

The second option is one-on-one personal training. An individual trainer will develop a program that is entirely focused on you based on your unique requirements. They will assess your current capabilities and set you up for success with multiple short term wins that lead to long-term improvements. You will discover the self-motivation and self-confidence to make a lifelong commitment to your own health. Furthermore, you will likely make more progress faster because your personal trainer is going to help you focus all your efforts on your main goal.

At Resilient Fitness, our personal trainers are certified, experienced, and highly qualified. They are masters in the art of motivation so that you will overcome obstacles, create new patterns in your personal life, and take ownership of your health. Our trainers are first and foremost educators. With their support, encouragement, and instruction, you will achieve the results you want.

Are you interested in taking advantage of either small group or one-on-one personal training? Give us a call to talk about which option will give you the results you desire.

THIS QUESTION COMES ALL THE TIME AND TODAY WE’RE GOING TO FINALLY ADDRESS IT..

How exactly can you make a RAPID change in the way you look, feel and think about yourself and your body?

The answer is simple and its one that the most successful people know and have used to create amazing results in their lives and bodies.

So how can you get results fast, get in shape, get healthy and with the least amount of time wasted?

The true answer is this:
Find someone that has done exactly what you’re after and follow what they did.

Easy right?

That probably was not were expecting but its the truth, the fastest way to see change is to get someone who’s already doing it.

Think about it they have already made the unforeseen mistakes, the pitfalls the hiccups and battled problems along the journey because they have already done it!

The truth you need a coach that has produced results with people like yourself in the past and has a system in place for replicating those results with you.
In fitness, its no different, finding someone with a proven track record and a system is a sure fire way to get on the path towards success.

Here’s why
#1 A coach is better than a mirror.
Ever thought you were doing something wrong until you saw someone else doing it? Then come to find out you were wrong the whole time?
The mirror won’t give you the verbal feedback about your form and technique it will only show you what your doing regardless of whether its right or wrong…

This could lead to muscular imbalances, injury or posture issues in the near future. What you don’t know DOES hurt you. Too many times people let their ego’s do the lifting. Or their too shy to ask for help. At Get Fit all of our trainer will happily show you anything your unsure of. Whether its a new exercise or a piece of equipment.

Don’t do more damage than good. Get some help and get better!

#2 Accountability.
How many times has this happened? You get to work with a big day planned, lunch with colleagues, a big report to finish up then the gym after!
By the time 4 pm rolls around your ready to throw in the towel on the whole entire day, there’s not way you’ll be able to get yourself to the gym, have a good workout and still have enough energy to take a shower….

Now if you had a an appointment the chances of you failing to meet that obligation are FAR less likely.
Accountability = Less missed workouts = more results.

#3 You learn useful stuff that you can use to help other and impress your friends with
Lets be honest, looking like you know what your doing in the gym stokes the ego, so does being looked at as the “authority figure” among family, friends and co-workers. Having a trainer is a shortcut to having tons on the actionable knowledge you can help others with and showoff from time to time.

#4 They push up outside of the comfort zone
We all know our own limits and where we can and will not go. Trainers don’t necessarily know exactly where that threshold is. That little push just outside of the comfort zone over time can have a huge impact on your results.

#5 They keep you from hitting road blocks.
Ever wonder why you stopped losing weight? Or why you stopped building muscle? Proper planning and programming is where a trainer earns his or her due. The right program and progression can keep your progress from stalling and keep you always moving the needle in the right direction.

#6 They keep things new and interesting
No one comes into the gym ready for boring workout…Having a coach or trainer gives you the opportunity to experience new styles of training, from yoga to kickboxing to strength conditioning. Exercise is supposed to be fun, if its boring your less likely to stick with it. Clients love it when we flip the switch and experiment with new gymnastics or bodyweight training then transition into bootcamp style or crossfit training methods. The variation keeps them guessing and keeps the training fun.

Find someone who’s done what you want to do or has produced the results your seeking! Don’t try to do it on your own, get help and get on track towards a complete body transformation this coming year!
